Most developments, including new buildings and house extensions, need planning permission. The Town Council’s Planning and Environment Committee discusses each planning application and sends our views to Cheshire East. We meet every 3 or 4 weeks – there are always plenty of planning applications in Poynton!
Cheshire East Council decides whether to grant planning permission. Only large developments (such as new housing estates) are debated and voted on by councillors at Cheshire East – most decisions are made by staff in their Planning Department. The Town Council is therefore the only opportunity for local elected representatives to comment on Poynton’s planning applications. Residents are welcome to attend Planning and Environment Committee meetings and speak on planning applications or listen to the debate.
The Committee also comments on applications for licensed premises, the Local Plan and environmental issues e.g., air quality, protected trees, flood risk and waste disposal – recently opposing plans by Cheshire East to close the Poynton Waste and Recycling site.
The Town Council has fought attempts to change the boundary of the Green Belt and allow building on open land, while supporting a bypass to remove through traffic from the village. We are pleased that the final section of the Poynton Relief Road is now being built – final completion is planned for Autumn 2022.

All meetings start at 8pm unless stated.
Although the Town Council’s committees don’t meet in August the Planning & Environment Committee still consider all applications which it receives from Cheshire East. The Town Council is a consultee and it sends comments to Cheshire East on applications that it receives.
Details of the planning applications currently being considered and how to comment to the Town Council can be found below. The Town Council would strongly urge all members of the public interested in particular applications to comment directly to Cheshire East as the Planning Authority.
