Community wellbeing in Poynton

Poynton Town Council’s Communities Co-ordinator role supports the health and well-being of Poynton residents.

Working closely with Bollington, Disley and Poynton’s Care Community with Middlewood Partnership at its heart, means we collectively identify health and wellbeing priorities for Poynton, and look at ways to address them.

As a result, a number of awareness raising events have been hosted at the Civic Hall.  These events are a good opportunity to talk to experts, find out about what support services and groups are in our area, and what self-help resources are available and include the following:

  • Health and wellbeing fairs for older people
  • Menopause events
  • Community Connect events showcasing groups who support people with learning difficulties and autism
  • Men’s Health Fair
  • Parents evening event to support parents with topics covering their child’s health with a focus on mental health
  • Memory awareness events, to name just a few.

Training sessions have also been made available on various wellbeing topics, including:

  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Bereavement Training
  • Health Walk leaders
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Heart Heroes: blood pressure and atrial fibrillation checks

The role helped to set up Bollington, Disley & Poynton Dementia Steering Group which continues to raise awareness about dementia and spread the word that it is possible to live well with dementia.

The group is made up of representatives from Poynton Town Council, local voluntary groups, professionals supporting people living with dementia, dementia services and carers. Over the years the group have been involved with: delivering Dementia Awareness Information Sessions; asking Clickety Click to make Twiddle muffs for people living with dementia; organised a Concert to Remember with care home residents and also created a local guide with support and social group information, ‘A guide for people living with memory loss or Dementia and their carers in Bollington, Disley and Poynton’.
