Household Waste and Recycling Centre Update

Published: 07 February 2025

In February 2024, Cheshire East Council announced their plan to close the Household Waste and Recycling Centre in Poynton. The Town Council worked with neighbouring councils, including Bollington Town Council, to try to persuade Cheshire East to reverse this decision and more importantly to try to secure the long term future of the Centre in Poynton. Ourselves and Bollington Town Council proposed that we should be given an opportunity to investigate the feasibility of taking over the running of the site with expertise from an outside contractor. We have had a number of meetings with representatives of Cheshire East who refused to consider delegating the running of the sites to Poynton or Bollington Town Council.

The Town Council also asked Cheshire East if we could investigate the option of their preferred supplier delivering the service paid for by the respective Town Councils. However, they were not willing to explore this option, supposedly due to the tight time constraints they were subject to.

Subsequently the Town Council has sought advice from the Association of Local Councils on the legal position, it is clear that there are no options available to re-open the site without the consent of Cheshire East. The former waste site on Anson Road is owned by Cheshire East, who would have to agree to its use by the Town Council. They also have legal powers as the Waste Disposal Authority to control the opening of waste sites. An alternative site would need planning permission from Cheshire East.

The Town Council is deeply disappointed at the refusal of Cheshire East to work with us on this important matter. The closure of the Anson Road site continues to cause serious inconvenience to local residents, with increased road traffic, air pollution and fly-tipping. We will continue to press for a more frequent and effective mobile waste disposal service.
