Walks in Poynton

There are 8 circular walks of various lengths and difficulties, which depart from, and return to, the Rangers Visitors Centre at Nelson Pit in Higher Poynton.

The walks take between one and three hours and depending on the chosen route could lead you on a gentle stroll along Macclesfield Canal or Middlewood Way to a more strenuous 6 mile hill walk up into Lyme Park and beyond.

Details of the walks can be found on the Cheshire East website and all 8 leaflets are available from Civic Hall reception. They are 50p each or £3.00 for a set of 8.

Poynton Town Council has created a walk to celebrate the rich mining heritage that the village possesses. Few visitors realise that Poynton once had the largest coalfield in Cheshire, with 74 pits.

Although coal mining ceased in 1935, there remain many clues to this former industry and the walk is designed to provide a glimpse into Poynton’s fascinating industrial past.

Refreshments and toilets are available along the route.
