Poynton Coppice Local Nature Reserve is an attractive woodland rich in wildlife. It is thought to have been continuously wooded for thousands of years, so is classed as an ancient woodland. Human activities in the past have helped to shape a habitat with a great variety of flora and fauna.

Part of the Coppice is privately owned, but an 8-hectare section is owned by Cheshire East Council and is managed with wildlife in mind. A circular path with steps, leads visitors from the Middlewood Way into the heart of the woodland.

The woodland management strategy includes the reintroduction, in part of the wood, of the traditional practice of coppicing. It may surprise you to learn that a coppiced woodland can, over time, develop a greater diversity of wildlife than an unmanaged woodland.

There is a public footpath through the woodland and also a short 400 meter circular walk, not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchair users as it includes a large number of steps down into the coppice and 3 narrow footbridges. Both paths start at the free car park on the Middlewood Way.
